Shirley Sykes - A Devoted Friend of the Zoo
If you ever tour the San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park with Founder’s Circle member Shirley Sykes and ask her what her favorite animal is, you’ll always get the same answer, “The one we’re looking at.” And, whenever Shirley visits the Zoo or Park, she wears a hat adorned with 50-plus colorful Zoological Society-related pins that commemorate everything from the Zoo’s 80th birthday Rose Parade float and the debut of the giant pandas to opening of the new veterinary center at the Park.

Dr. Esther Mayfield - A Ph.D. With Pizzaz and a Soft Spot in Her Heart for Animals
Esther O. Mayfield, Ph.D., is a fascinating, multi-talented person with a myriad of interests and a yen for learning. She is an engineering consultant extraordinaire, an advocate for animals, an Asian art afficionado, and she is in the midst of writing a children’s book about financial planning, The Money Game. She is also a major contributor to the Zoological Society of San Diego through a Charitable Remainder Trust funded by real estate – two apartment buildings.

Virginia Thompson - An Extraordinary Octogenarian
Virginia Thompson is one of those people who never ceases to amaze those who know and love her. Throughout her life, this Zoological Society of San Diego donor has always had a zest for adventure, the spirit of generosity, an astute sense of financial responsibility, and a love for animals and art. And, now, even though she is 80-plus years old, she doesn’t show signs of slowing down.
